Prize highlights

Across the Press we continue to achieve external recognition for our work and contribution towards academia and education, with a successful year of awards and prizes.


Our academic publishing once again had a remarkable year for prizes, securing 85 awards in 2021, with an additional 14 honourable mentions, and shortlisted titles, amongst other recognitions. The most significant author achievements include:

Of particular note was our performance at the 2021 British Medical Awards (BMA), which were especially competitive with approximately 900 titles submitted after last year’s awards were cancelled. Four OUP titles were recognized, including one as the overall winner:

  • BMA Medical Book of the Year 2021 award and winner in the Public Health category for Health Equity in a Globalizing Era: Past Challenges, Future Prospects by Ronald Labonté and Arne Ruckert
  • Winner in the Oncology category for Oxford Textbook of Cancer in Children seventh edition, edited by Hubert N. Caron, Andrea Biondi, Tom Boterberg, and François Doz
  • Winner in the Anaesthesia, critical care, and emergency medicine category for A Field Manual for Palliative Care in Humanitarian Crises, edited by Elisha Waldman and Marcia Glass
  • Winner in the Hospital medicine category for Oxford Handbook of Palliative Care, edited by Max Watson, Stephen Ward, Nandini Vallath, Jo Wells, and Rachel Campbell

Within major discipline-specific associations, including the American Historical Association, the American Political Science Association, and the American Society of International Law, multiple OUP titles were recognized.

The exceptional quality and breadth of OUP USA’s publications in the field of military history in 2021 were recognized with a quartet of wins of the Society for Military History’s Distinguished Book Awards:

  • Best book on US military history award for Divisions: A New History of Racism and Resistance in America's World War II Military by Thomas A. Guglielmo
  • Best book on non-US military history award for Fortress Dark and Stern: The Soviet Home Front during World War II by Wendy Goldman and Donald Filtzer
  • Best first book award for Faustian Bargain: The Soviet-German Partnership and the Origins of the Second World War by Ian Ona Johnson
  • Best reference work award for Oxford Handbook of Gender, War and the Western World since 1600, edited by Karen Hagemann, Stefan Dudink, and Sonya O. Rose
  • The Music in American Culture Award and the Philip Brett Award, Flaming: The Peculiar Theopolitics of Fire and Desire in Black Male Gospel Performance (2020) by Alisha Lola Jones
  • The American Philosophical Association’s 2021 Book Prize, Games: Agency as Art (2020) by C. Thi Nguyen
  • American Academy of Religion Book Awards, Award for Excellence in the Study of Religion: Historical Studies, The Origin and Character of God (2020) by Theodore J. Lewis
  • The Association for Recorded Sound Collections Best Historical Research in Recorded Jazz award, Heart Full of Rhythm: The Big Band Years of Louis Armstrong (2020) by Ricky Riccardi

In addition to the above awards listed, over 40 books were selected for ‘Best Book of the Year’, ‘Holiday Gift Guides’, and ‘Books to Read in 2022’.

  • Education Resources Award 2021 winners in the Special Educational Resources category for NELI
  • Education Resources Award 2021 finalists in the Special Educational Resources category for Read Write Inc. Fresh Start
  • Bett Awards 2021 finalists in the Covid-19 Response Champions category
  • Innovations Award 2021 finalists in the Local Innovation category for Talk about China with Oxford (TAC)
  • PragatiE Vichaar Literature Festival (PVLF) Excellence Awards, Readers’ Choice Book Award awarded to The Oxford Student Atlas for India
  • Indian Education Awards 2021’s Best eBooks in the School and Higher Education awarded to Oxford University Press India
  • Oxford International Curriculum was shortlisted for the Transform Awards 2022, a major European design industry award, in the Best Development of a New Brand Within an Existing Brand Portfolio category
  • OUP ANZ educational resources shortlisted for awards in the Educational Publishing Awards 2021
  • Artist of the Year Award (Literature) in Hong Kong awarded to Dr Stuart Lau, Assistant Editorial Director in Hong Kong

In addition, three Oxford African Language literature titles were shortlisted for the prestigious SA Literary Awards, and three OUP ANZ titles were included in the longlist for the 70th Australian Book Design Awards 2022 by The Australian Book Design Association.
